What is Petey’s Fund?
Petey’s Fund has been established for residents of New Hanover County, NC, who are in need of the services of Eastern Carolina Veterinary Referral and Animal Emergency and Trauma Center in Wilmington, NC.
We are not always financially prepared for an emergency, serious injury or illness. We know how important our pet's companionship and love is to our own well-being, and Petey’s Fund may be able to help keep a pet in their home in such cases.
If you are a resident of New Hanover County in need of assistance, you may discuss your case with the veterinarian, case manager , or veterinary social worker at ECVR and complete an application. A representative from Paws-Ability will review your application and contact you to determine your eligibility. You will be asked to provide proof of financial disability, We will make an initial assessment, and communicate with you and your vet about your pet.
Applications for assistance through this program are provided by ECVR and are not available on the Paws-Abiity website. Please discuss your need for assistance with hospital personnel, who will make an initial determination of eligibility and assist you with the completion of an application.
Our grants are typically between $100 and $500. Decisions are based on several factors, including medical urgency, financial need, eligibility, and available funding.
Animals must be spayed or neutered to qualify for assistance.
Paws-Ability must be granted access to your pet’s veterinary records, including medical history and current diagnosis, treatment plan, and cost estimate. By submitting your application, you are agreeing to grant that access.
Our funds are limited and we simply DO NOT have the funds to pay for general and/or routine veterinary care. Assistance is limited to one time per household. Our priority for accepting an application for funding will be a critical situation confirmed by a licensed veterinarian.
If you are eligible, Petey’s Fund will help you pay for certain costs, determined in conjunction with your veterinarian. We pay veterinarians directly and do not reimburse families for costs already paid. You will be expected to pay a certain percentage of your costs.

Petey’s Story
From Petey’s family:
Petey was a 45-pound mixed-breed, rescue with a coat of velvet and a heart of gold. Children used to line up just to pet him, and he would greet everyone with a happy tail wag. He was as tough as he was sweet, having survived a deadly blood disease and a rattlesnake bite. He passed away at 15 after a long and happy life. Petey’s family would like to ensure that local pets get the medical care they need and deserve. This fund, in Petey’s memory, is meant to assist others in the community who are struggling financially with the care of their pets. Petey was a patient at ECVR in a time of medical crisis. It is there that his family had to say their goodbyes, but thanks to Petey’s Fund, his memory will live on forever. Petey’s legacy will help other families during their time of crisis at ECVR. |
Paws-Ability is pleased to administer this fund to assist families like Petey’s during a difficult or emergency situation and allow these pets to get the care they need.
Paws-Ability accepts donations to Petey’s Fund through our website and by mail. If writing a check, please make it payable to “Paws-Ability” and note Petey’s Fund at the bottom. 100% of your donation will go to help animals in need at ECVR. Thank you for your support!
