“Pet Me Safely” Book Promotion
Paws-Ability business members, Amadeus and his human Mary Cofer have added a promotion to benefit our organization. You can access their website thru the Paws-Ability Business members entry or just go to www.amadeusbooks.com. Click on the “Pet Me Safely Special” photo or click on “My Online Store,” then click on “PawsAbility Promotion” on the right hand side of the screen. Both actions take you to a special page featuring the “Pet Me Safely” book and “Amadeus Pet Me Safely Special” (book and toy). Purchase either of these items, and 30% of the price of the book goes to PawsAbility. During the check-out process, put the words “amadeus” in the promo code box for the Pet Me Safely book. For the Pet Me Safely special with the book and small dog, the promo code is “amadeus1”. This will help us to identify items eligible for PawsAbility promotion in our regular reporting process. These are the books that Paws-Ability has made available to Tails U Win and SOAR to be given to families with children who adopt a new dog. It is a wonderful book to help a child understand how to pet a dog safely. Both rescue groups have had wonderful feedback from families receiving the books.
Thank you Amadeus and Mary for your support in our ongoing fundraising efforts. Thank you members who have purchased the book or those who will purchase the books.

MINUTES OF MEETING WITH
Don Yousey Health Director, Brunswick County
February 1, 2010
Animal Services Advisory Committee
Mr. Yousey began the meeting with refreshments and introductions. He then explained he would need to leave early because his presence was needed at the Board of Commissioners meeting.
He then gave a synopsis of the San Felipe meeting. He also noted that petitions being signed around Brunswick county are fine with him. They are being directed to the commissioners since the commissioners are the ones with the ultimate control over what is done at the Animal Shelter.
He is hoping that he can get volunteers working at the shelter, but his counsel has told him that his idea to get five volunteers on a regular basis and get them the needed shots to work at the animal shelter is still not an idea he’d accept. Since working on site was not acceptable, Mr. Yousey was hoping to use a volunteer committee to follow up and contact all adoptees to encourage and see that they have gotten the adopted animal spayed or neutered All adoptees have been given vouchers and paid for their new pet to be spayed/neutered. Yousey stated that only 30% of the adopted animals actually were spayed/neutered. He also stated that the Animal Shelter has spent $40,000 for the poor to spay/neuter their animals. Another way volunteers could help would be to bring animals to an adoption fair or get their pictures up on a adoption website. Most of all, he would support the formation a task force volunteer 501C 3 group to run the Animal Shelter. He would support this initiative be the liaison to the Board of Health and the Board of Commissioners. He did mention that there is a state free spay/neuter plan and Dr. Carl Williams in Raleigh is the head of that.
Mr. Yousey also stated that since their purchase of extra cages for cats, no cat has had a bad reaction to the use of shots and he expects that no cat will have to be euthanized in the chamber from now on. He was hoping that some sort of licensure would be enacted by the commissioners with larger fees for animals that are not spayed or neutered. Maybe there can be community interest and petitions in this and suggested to the commissioners. He tried but had no luck. Someone in the group also stated they should get breeder rules and licenses.
Before he left, Mr.Yousey said he hoped we could get past talking about the issues and do something.
Mr. David Stanley, Mr. David Swain and two animal shelter employees remained to field more questions and speak to the issues that were on the agenda.
Then the differences were explained between the governing council and the advisory committee. The council can enact changes and the committee can voice opinions but can not enact any changes in Animal Services. He explained that they had a member from the council sitting on the committee to be able to answer questions and bring information from the committee to the council. This committee has five current members,
Bill Smith, Tom Labant, Margarete O'Leary, Dr. King, and Ray Casteen. Audience question from Peter McQueen: Isn’t Dr. King being on both the Board of Health Council and the Advisory Board a conflict of interest. A: He’s there as a liaison and the Advisory Board is not a decision making board but an advisory board.
Now there is a problem in Brunswick County with a 46% stray and 47% owner turn-in rate. People are having financial problems. Margarete O’Leary stated there is a feed the hungry program sponsored by Brunswick Animal League and CHETA. In hardship cases and for a limited time, they would help people who would be surrendering their animals because they couldn’t feed them anymore.
FYI: There is a county webpage – go to Health Department and they also have a presence on Facebook. First and third Mondays – Health Department meetings at the Sandifer Bldg. To be notified of the Advisory Meetings, email dswain@brunsco.net .
